According to John

Chapter 3

  1. How did Nicodemus know that Jesus was a "a teacher come from God"?

  2. When Jesus spoke of being born again, what did Nicodemus ask?

  3. Jesus spoke of being "born of water and the Spirit." What does this mean?

    a. Read Mk. 1:5, Jn. 1:25-28, Jn. 3:22-23, & Jn. 4:1-2, and determine what Nicodemus would have most naturally understood the reference to water to mean.

    b. Read 1 Pt. 1:23 and 2 Pt. 1:21 and determine what it means to be born of water and the Spirit.

  4. Read Numbers 21:4-9, 2 Cor. 5:20-21, and Jn. 3:14-15, and be prepared to explain the analogy in Jn. 3:14.

  5. Read Jn. 3:17-21. Compare Jn. 9:39. Does Jn. 3:17-21 speak of a judgment that does take place? Is this judgment pictured as the direct result of Jesus coming into the world, or the direct result of men's actions (either coming or not coming to the light)?

  6. For further information concerning Nicodemus, read Jn. 7:45-52 and 19:38-39.

  7. Why was John baptizing in Aenon near to Salim, as opposed to some other place?

  8. What questioning, or discussion, took place between a Jew and John's disciples?

  9. What evidently had prompted this discussion? (See Jn. 3:22-23).

  10. Who was "he that was with thee beyond the Jordan"? (3:26)

  11. What were John's disciples concerned about, and how did John respond to their concern?

  12. Explain John's use of the illustration involving the wedding party.
